Seoul: A Surprisingly Great City for Running
Seoul is one of the safest cities in the world, with over 100 km of paved Han River paths, mountains in the city center, and 24-hour amenities that make it an ideal running destination. Here's everything you need to know before your first run.
What Makes Seoul Running Special
The Han River: Your Main Artery
Over 100 km of paved, flat, fully-lit multi-use paths run along both sides of the Han River. Water fountains, restrooms, and convenience stores appear at regular intervals — you never need to worry about supplies. It's the backbone of Seoul's running culture.
Urban Trails
Mountains like Namsan (262 m), Bugaksan, and Inwangsan sit right in the city center, offering 5-10 km trail runs with elevation. Surfaces range from pavement to packed dirt, and views extend across the entire city skyline.
Running Culture
Seoul has a vibrant running crew scene. Find expat-friendly groups on Instagram or Meetup — most welcome all levels. Regular group runs happen on Wednesdays and Saturdays at spots like Yeouido and Jamsil.
Weather & Seasons
| Season | Period | Conditions | Rating | |--------|--------|-----------|--------| | Spring | Mar-May | Cherry blossoms, 10-20°C | Best | | Summer | Jun-Aug | Hot & humid, monsoon in July | Early AM/PM | | Autumn | Sep-Nov | Fall foliage, crisp air, 10-20°C | Best | | Winter | Dec-Feb | Sub-zero, dry | Layer up |
Watch out for sudden downpours during monsoon season (July). Winter demands windproof layers and careful footing on icy patches.
Safety Tips
- Security: Seoul is extremely safe. Han River paths are well-lit and CCTV-monitored even at night, but reflective gear is always wise
- Traffic: Watch for motorcycles on sidewalks — the one thing to be cautious about in Seoul
- Air quality: Spring can bring high PM2.5 levels. Check the AirVisual app before heading out
- Emergency: Police 112, Ambulance 119 (English interpretation available)
Getting Around
Seoul's subway system is world-class. Most running course starting points are within a 10-minute walk of a station. A single T-money card covers subway, bus, and convenience store payments.
The subway is also the most convenient way to reach a sauna after your run. Every Runsen course includes the nearest station information.

The Reward After the Run
The true charm of running in Seoul lies in what comes after. Chimaek (fried chicken and beer) by the river, a warm soak in a neighborhood bathhouse, a quiet coffee at a hidden cafe. Runsen guides not just the run, but the entire experience that follows.
